The Train Encounter
Once
upon a time, a person (the narrator) was sitting alone in a train compartment.
A man entered the compartment carrying a fancy suitcase. He looked at the
narrator and excitedly said, "Well, well!" as if he recognized him.
The narrator, however, had no idea who this man was.
The
man kept saying, "Well, well!" and seemed very happy to see the
narrator. The narrator was confused and tried to remember who this man could
be. He mentioned that he didn't know him from Adam (a way of saying he didn't
know him at all) and that he had a very good memory, but sometimes he just
couldn't remember names or faces.
The Memory Game
The
man then said, "By Jove!" (an old-fashioned way of expressing
surprise) and asked, "Who would have thought of seeing you?" The narrator
was still trying to figure out who this man was, but he just couldn't remember.
The
man started talking about how life goes on and people lose track of each other.
He mentioned that sometimes he wonders where all the old friends have gone. The
narrator agreed and said that he often meets people who start talking about the
"old gang" and wonder what he's been up to.
The Clever Trick
The
man then asked about someone named Billy, and the narrator said he hadn't heard
from Billy in a while. The man said Billy was ranching in Montana. Then he
asked about Pete, and the narrator said Pete was Billy's brother. The man said
he often thought of Pete, and the narrator mentioned that Pete had settled
down.
The
man then looked out the window and said they should have gotten off at the last
station. He called out to the porter (a train attendant) to ask how long they
would stop at the next station. The porter said they would stop for just two
minutes.
The Distraction
The
man then pulled out a bunch of keys and started fumbling with the lock of his
suitcase. He said he needed to wire back (send a telegram). The narrator, being
helpful, offered to help with the lock. The man grabbed the money the narrator
had pulled out to help and thanked him.
The Realization
Suddenly,
the man jumped off the train, and the narrator realized he had been tricked.
The man had stolen his money! The narrator heard the man's voice again, saying
he had left the suitcase on the seat and that it belonged to his wife. The narrator
realized the man was part of a clever scheme to steal his money and suitcase.
The Lesson Learned
The
narrator felt foolish for falling for the trick and decided to be more cautious
in the future. He realized that the man had used the names Billy and Pete to
make him think they were old friends, and he had been too trusting.
The End
The
narrator learned a valuable lesson about being careful with strangers and not
revealing too much information. He decided to be more cautious in the future to
avoid such incidents.
And
that's the story of the train encounter!
