A King’s Tale

About the Story

King Arthur was a king of the Britons several hundreds of years ago. He was a very popular and brave king. There are many legends about him. The following tale is an adaptation from the ancient Arthurian legends.

কিং আর্থার কয়েকশো বছর আগে ব্রিটিশদের একজন রাজা ছিলেন। তিনি খুব জনপ্রিয় এবং সাহসী রাজা ছিলেন। তাকে নিয়ে অনেক কিংবদন্তি রয়েছে। নিম্নলিখিত কাহিনীটি প্রাচীন আর্থুরিয়ান কিংবদন্তীর একটি রূপান্তর।

 the First Part:

Many hundreds of years ago, England was ruled by a king called Uther Pendragon.

বহু শত বছর আগে ইংল্যান্ডে উথার পেন্ডারগন নামে এক রাজা শাসন করেছিলেন।

The king, who was friend and protector to all his people, was fair to everyone.

রাজা, যিনি তাঁর সমস্ত লোকের বন্ধু এবং সুরক্ষক ছিলেন, তিনি সবার প্রতি ন্যায়বিচার করেছিলেন।

The people of Britain lived in peace and happiness, tending their flocks and tilling their fields.

ব্রিটেনের লোকেরা তাদের মেষপাল চরাতে এবং তাদের ক্ষেত্র অবধি শান্তিতে ও সুখে বাস করত।

 

King Uther-Pendragon had married the beautiful Lady Igraine, and had a son.

কিং আর্থার-পেনড্রাগন সুন্দরী মহিলা ইগ্রাইনকে বিয়ে করেছিলেন এবং তার একটি ছেলে হয়েছিল।

This child was the heir to the royal throne.

এই শিশুটি ছিল সিংহাসনের উত্তরাধিকারী।

The king and the queen died soon after the baby boy was born.

রাজা এবং রানী শিশুর জন্মের পরপরই মারা গেলেন।

 

It was a difficult time.

এটি একটি কঠিন সময় ছিল।

Many of the king’s opponents were looking to seize the throne.

রাজার অনেক বিরোধীরা সিংহাসন দখল করতে চেয়েছিলেন।

King Uther Pendragon had two wise counsellors-Merlin, a prophet and a magician, and the brave knight, Sir Ulfius.

কিং উথার পেনড্রাগনের দুজন জ্ঞানী পরামর্শদাতা ছিলেন- মেরিলিন, একজন ভবিষ্যদ্বক্তা এবং যাদুকর এবং সাহসী নাইট, স্যার উলফিয়াস।

They were greatly trusted by the royal family.

তারা রাজপরিবার দ্বারা খুবই বিশ্বস্ত ছিল।

When the king and the queen were no more, the two counsellors met Sir Ector the Trustworthy, a loyal subject of the king, on a cold and windy midnight.

রাজা এবং রানী যখন আর বেঁচে ছিলেন না, তখন দু’জন পরামর্শদাতা শীত ও ঝড়ো আবহাওয়ায় মধ্যরাতে রাজার অনুগত প্রজা স্যার অ্যাক্টর সবচেয়ে বিশ্বাসযোগ্য, এর সাথে দেখা করলেন।

They placed in his hands a baby wrapped in a scarlet cloak.

তারা তাঁর হাতে একটি শিশুকে একটি লাল রঙের চাদরে জড়িয়ে তুলে দিলেন।

Merlin said, “We order you and your wife to bring up this child as though he were your own son.”

মের্লিন বলেছিলেন, “আমরা আপনাকে এবং আপনার স্ত্রীকে এই সন্তানকে লালন-পালন করার জন্য আদেশ দিচ্ছি যেন সে আপনার নিজের ছেলে।”

“The boy is to be called Arthur,” Sir Ulfius said.

“ছেলেটিকে আর্থার নামে ডাকা হবে,” স্যার উলফিউস বলেছিলেন।

Sir Ector, being a true knight, asked no questions and promised to obey his late king’s counsellors.

স্যার অ্যাক্টর একজন সত্যিকারের নাইট হওয়ার জন্য, কোনও প্রশ্ন জিজ্ঞাসা করেননি এবং তাঁর প্রয়াত রাজার পরামর্শদাতাদের আনুগত্যের প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েছিলেন।

As Merlin and Sir Ulfius had feared, trouble broke out in Britain after the passing away of the king.

মারলিন এবং স্যার উলফিয়াস যেমনটা ভয় পেয়েছিলেন, রাজার মৃত্যুর পরে ব্রিটেনে ঝামেলা শুরু হয়েছিল।

The barons were fighting among themselves and plotting to capture the throne.

ব্যারনরা নিজেদের মধ্যে লড়াই করছিল এবং সিংহাসন দখলের ষড়যন্ত্র করছিল।

Britain was in the grip of lawlessness.

ব্রিটেন ছিল অনাচারের কবলে।

Travellers were regularly robbed.

যাত্রীদের নিয়মিত ছিনতাই করা হত।

The peasants were unhappy.

কৃষকরা অসুখী ছিল।

the Second Part:

In the home of Sir Ector, Arthur, the son of the late king, was spending his boyhood in happiness and safety.

স্যার এক্টরের বাড়িতে, প্রয়াত রাজার পুত্র আর্থার তার বাল্যকাল সুখ এবং সুরক্ষায় কাটাচ্ছিল।

As he grew older, he became gentle, strong, handsome and good like his father Uther-Pendragon.

বয়স বাড়ার সাথে সাথে সে তার বাবা উথার-পেনড্রাগনের মতো ভদ্র, শক্তিশালী, সুদর্শন এবং ভাল মানুষ হয়ে উঠল।

Eighteen years passed.

আঠারো বছর কেটে গেল।

Britain was torn by bitter rivalry.

ব্রিটেন তিক্ত প্রতিদ্বন্দ্বিতায় ছিন্নভিন্ন হয়ে গিয়েছিল।

None of the fighting barons had managed to become the king.

সংগ্রামশীল ব্যারনদের কেউই রাজা হতে পারেনি।

The people longed for the old days of peace and prosperity under Uther-Pendragon.

মানুষ উথার-পেনড্রাগনের অধীনে শান্তি ও সমৃদ্ধির পুরানো দিনগুলির জন্য অপেক্ষা করেছিল।

It was Christmas time, a time of festivity.

এটি ছিল ক্রিসমাসের সময়, উত্‍সবের সময়।

But all around Britain, people were hungry, cold and frightened.

কিন্তু সমগ্র ব্রিটেনে মানুষ ছিল ক্ষুধার্ত, শীতার্ত এবং ভীত।

One day, in a churchyard, people found a large stone on which was fixed a magnificent sword.

একদিন, গির্জার উঠোনে লোকেরা একটি বিশাল পাথর দেখতে পেল, যার উপরে একটি চমত্‍কার তরোয়াল রাখা ছিল।

Upon the stone, in gold letters, was inscribed,” whoever pulls out this sword is by right of birth, the king of England.”

পাথরের উপরে সোনার অক্ষরে লিখিত ছিল, “যে কেউ এই তরোয়াল টেনে আনবে সে জন্মের অধিকারে, ইংল্যান্ডের রাজা হবে।”

Immediately, the eager barons who longed to become the king, jostled among themselves to lift the sword.

তত্ক্ষণাত্, আগ্রহী ব্যারনরা যারা রাজা হতে চেয়েছিল, তরোয়াল তোলার জন্য নিজেদের মধ্যে ধাক্কাধাক্কী করতে লাগল।

None succeeded.

কেউই সফল হল না।

The sword remained fixed to the stone.

তরোয়াল পাথরই অটল রইল।

It was Arthur, at the age of eighteen, who succeeded in lifting the sword for the first time.

এটি আঠার বছর বয়সে আর্থার, যে প্রথমবারের মতো তরোয়াল তুলতে সফল হল।

The barons were angry and disappointed.

ব্যারনরা ক্রুদ্ধ এবং হতাশ হয়েছিল।

They demanded a test.

Upon a bright May morning, a great trial took place in the presence of many people.

জনতা তাকে রাজা বলে সম্বোধন করেছিল।

After becoming the king of England, Arthur’s first duty was to secure peace in England.

ইংল্যান্ডের রাজা হওয়ার পরে আর্থারের প্রথম কাজ ছিল ইংল্যান্ডে শান্তি নিশ্চিত করা।

He was helped by wise Merlin.

জ্ঞানী মের্লিন তাকে সাহায্য করেছিলেন।

Like his father, Arthur was concerned about the good of the common people.

বাবার মতো আর্থারও সাধারণ মানুষের মঙ্গল নিয়ে উদ্বিগ্ন ছিলেন।

King Arthur fought battles so that no one could ill-treat the humblest of his subjects.

রাজা আর্থার লড়াই করেছিলেন যাতে কেউ তার বিনীত প্রজাদের সাথে খারাপ আচরণ করতে না পারে।

King Arthur had lost his royal sword in a battle.

রাজা আর্থার একটি যুদ্ধে তার রাজকীয় তরোয়ালটি হারিয়েছিলেন।

One day, Merlin took him to a valley of sweet-smelling flowers.

একদিন, ম্যারলিন তাকে মিষ্টি গন্ধযুক্ত ফুলের উপত্যকায় নিয়ে গেলেন।

At the edge of the plain, there was a deep lake.

সমভূমির প্রান্তে একটি গভীর হ্রদ ছিল।

As Arthur approached the lake, a beautiful arm with golden bracelets rose from the water.

আর্থার হ্রদের কাছে আসতেই সোনার ব্রেসলেট সহ একটি সুন্দর বাহু জল থেকে উঠে এল।

The hand held a sword set with rubies and emeralds.

হাতে রুবি এবং পান্না দিয়ে একটি তরোয়াল সেট ছিল।

the Third Part:

“This is the Excalibur”, Merlin said. “Only an honest and fearless knight who protects the common people can possess this sword.”

“এটি এক্সজিলিবার (কিং আর্থারের কিংবদন্তি তরোয়াল)”, মের্লিন বলেছিলেন। “সাধারণ মানুষকে রক্ষা করা কেবলমাত্র একজন সৎ ও নির্ভীক নাইটই এই তরোয়ালটি অধিকার করতে পারবেন।”

King Arthur accepted the enchanted sword from the mysterious hand appearing from the depths of the lake.

রাজা আর্থার হ্রদের গভীরে থেকে উপস্থিত রহস্যময় হাত থেকে মন্ত্রিত তরোয়াল গ্রহণ করেছিলেন।

“I shall never use this magic sword for any personal benefit,” King Arthur declared.

He married the beautiful Lady Guinevere, daughter of the king of Cornwall.

On the wedding day, Merlin took him to a richly gilded pavilion, painted crimson and dark blue.

With tearful eyes, everyone bade goodbye to the old king as the barge sailed with him towards the setting sun.

অশ্রুসিক্ত চোখে, সবাই বৃদ্ধ রাজাকে বিদায় জানাল যখন অস্তমিত সূর্যের অভিমুখে বজড়াটি যাত্রা করল।

(d) Why did King Arthur smile when he was informed that the Excalibur was taken back into the lake by a beautiful arm?
Ans:  King Arthur smiled when he was informed that the Excalibur was taken back into the lake by a beautiful arm because the same incident had happened with him earlier.

In the following sentences underline the groups of words that do the work of an Adjective:

(i) The king is wearing a crown which is made of gold.

(ii) He walked on the path that was stony.

(iii) He has a friend who is very helpful.

The groups of words that you have underlined do the work of an Adjective and contain Subjects and Predicates of their own. Such a group of words is called an Adjective Clause.

An Adjective Clause is introduced by a Relative Pronoun and so it is called a Relative Clause.

তোমরা শব্দের যে গোষ্ঠীগুলিকে নিম্নরেখাঙ্কিত করেছ সেগুলি একটি বিশেষণ এর কাজ করে এবং এতে উদ্দেশ্য এবং তাদের নিজস্ব বিধেয় থাকে। এই জাতীয় শব্দের একটি গ্রুপকে Adjective Clause বলা হয় ।

একটি Adjective Clause একটি Relativ Pronoun দ্বারা প্রবর্তন করা হয় এবং তাই এটিকে Relative Clause বলা হয়।

Activity 10 (a)

Imagine you are Merlin, the wise counsellor to King Arthur. Write a paragraph in about eighty words on the advices you would have given the king in his times of trouble.

Ans: In times of troubles, only the trustworthy people can be counted on. I would advise my King to never give up in any situation. I would tell him to follow the path that has been laid down many years ago. I would also advise my king to be firm and take proper action with a pragmatic attitude. I would advise him not to be hasty in making decisions and think twice before coming to the conclusion. Beyond everything else, I would assure him that I will be there for him no matter how the time gets.

Activity 10 (b)

Write a summary of the following passage :

Ans: During the reign of Khalifa Haroon-ul-Rashid, a businessman named Ali went on a pilgrimage. Putting his five hundred gold coins in a jar and after filling it with oil, he gave it to his neighbour Abdul. One day Abdul found the gold coins under the oil. He poured all the oil, took all the coins and replaced the jar with another oil jar. When Ali returned after few months, Abdul told him that he did not know anything. So Ali went to Khalifa to complain but he went to Khalifa to complain but he had no proof against Abdul. Hearing his complain, the wise Khalifa called an oil merchant. He tasted the oil and said that the oil was 2 months older but Ali was gone for seven months. Thus Abdul was caught and Ali got back his lost gold coins.
