Animals are classified on the basis of different characteristics. Any three are:

(i) Presence or absence of backbone

  • Animals without a vertebral column are called invertebrates.

(ii) Body symmetry

  • Bilateral symmetry: The body can be divided into two equal halves by only one plane (e.g., earthworm).
  • Radial symmetry: The body can be divided into similar halves by many planes passing through the centre (e.g., starfish).

(iii) Body cavity (Coelom)

  • The body cavity between the body wall and internal organs is called the coelom.
  • Animals may be acoelomate, pseudocoelomate, or coelomate depending on the presence of this cavity.

(Other acceptable bases include segmentation, body covering, habitat, reproduction, etc., if given in your textbook.)
